Appeal from Ukrainian mathematicians

28.02.2022

Dear EMS members
The whole world witnessed how on February 24, the President of Russia Putin started a military invasion of Ukraine, which is a blatant act of aggression on a neighbouring democratic country.
The Russian army is shelling residential areas of our cities from Russia, Belarus, and occupied Transdniestrian region, killing civilians and destroying infrastructure. This is an attack not only on Ukraine but on those values and freedoms that we hope all EMS members share with us.
Many European mathematicians have participated in the conferences held in Ukraine. This year, we planned to organize a number of meetings in which our European colleagues planned to participate. Unfortunately, now their organization is impossible, as most of our fellow mathematicians have to defend this country in any possible way, helping the army and civilians. They do what they can.
We also ask you to do everything you can do:

  1. Make an open statement about the strict disapproval of the Russian military aggression and a call for peace
  2. Suspend all EMS activities and membership in Russia. Many EMS members in Russia do not support the war but they are scared since for any protest or even any mention of the word “war” they are seized by the police. However, at the same time, many of our soldiers sacrifice their lives protecting the country. Russian EMS members must understand that Putin’s military aggression is destroying also Russia’s future
  3. Support the appeal to NATO to protect our sky
  4. Urge your governments to impose strict sanctions on Russia and suspend all export of high-tech products
  5. Please support Ukrainian Army or Ukrainian Red Cross
  6. Many Ukrainians in your countries collect medical supplies and things for refugees; please help them in any way you can
  7. Contact other members of the EMS, spread the call for support of Ukraine and help us to stop the war!
Thank you for your involvement!
By helping protect Ukraine you will help to protect the whole Europe!

On behalf of the Ukrainian mathematicians
Yuriy Drozd, President of the Ukrainian Mathematical Society
Yevhen Khruslov, President of the Kharkiv Mathematical Society
Sergiy Maksymenko, President of the Kyiv Mathematical Society
Olena Karlova, President of the Chernivtsi Mathematical Society

Letter from Pavel Exner

I strongly condemn barbaric military action of Russia political leadership against people of Ukraine. Their highly irresponsible deeds, which already costed lives of many innocent people, affected many of our Ukrainian colleagues and friends. Equally worrying, they will have long term consequences. The common goal of us scientists, irrespective of our nationality, is to make life better through deeper understanding mechanics of our world; this needs the trust which takes time to build but it is easy to lose.
All decent people should call on Russian president to return mentally to the real world, stop immediately the aggression, and retire the troops from the Ukrainian territory.

Past EMS President

Belgian Mathematical Society

Dear colleagues,
I thank you for your message which I will relay to the members of the Belgian Mathematical Society. Attached is a statement written after the IMU's decision.
We stand by you in these terrible times, facing an aggression which brings us back to the worst ages of our humanity.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can help concretely. I can only imagine how terrifying the situation you are in must be.

Yours sincerely,
Yvik Swan,
The President of Belgian Mathematical Society

La Société Mathématique de France

Dear colleagues,
I beg you to believe that french people and in particular the mathematician colleagues and the SMF feel extremely concerned by Ukraine.
This Russian aggression on Ukraine is absolutely abject and totally unjustifiable.
If you wish, I can publish your letter on our website. Let me know.
The SMF should issue a statement on this aggression very soon.
I don't know if you can follow all the information but it seems that finally the European community is acting together and taking strong decisions.
Do not hesitate to contact the SMF again.
Even if this is a pity in the face of the situation you are experiencing, believe me that we have been thinking of you very strongly every day since 24 February.
The Ukrainian people are very brave, this is greeted by all the media here in France. We will be delighted to welcome you to the European community. With all my friendship and the support of the SMF

Amicalement.
Fabien Durand,
The President of La Société Mathématique de France

Polish Mathematical Society

Dear Ukrainian Colleagues,
Fellow Mathematicians,
Dear Presidents,
We are shocked by the terrible agression, the invasion of Ukraine. We express our deep solidarity with you. I forwarded your letter to all members of the Polish Mathematical Society.
We will support any efforts to help you.
We should be together to overcome this difficult time,

Best regards,
Jacek Miękisz,
President of PTM

Société Luxembourg du Luxembourg

Dear Friends,
thank you very much for your message - you should know that the Ukrainian invasion is right at the center of everyone's attention, everywhere in the world. We are all holding our breath and are trying to help as much as we can. I know it is not enough, and I apologize for this.
I have personally addressed all the people of my department (in Luxembourg there is just one university and one math department) to this webpage
https://www.ukrainians.lu/ and many of us started moving very quickly.
The Rector of the University of Luxembourg has just issued the statement reported below.
Many initiatives have been undertaken by colleagues from every department. We are currently exploring the possibility of liberating funds for welcoming Ukrainian students willing to pursue their studies (this does not only involve mathematics).
More will follow, hopefully.

Kindly,
Giovanni Peccati,
The President of Société Luxembourg du Luxembourg

The rector of the University of Luxembourg, Prof. Stéphane Pallage,
has issued the following statement to the University community:

Dear students, dear colleagues,
There are no words to qualify the horrors of the war in Ukraine. The Ukrainian people have given the world a lesson of courage. As rector of a University, I cannot stay silent. Rectors do not call for violence, not even violence to counter violence. Words should be the weapon of democracy.
In the name of the community of the University of Luxembourg, I condemn in the strongest possible terms the illegal invasion of Ukraine by troops of the Russian Federation. We demand an immediate end to the military aggression and occupation of the territory of Ukraine.
The University of Luxembourg reaffirms its solidarity with all University staff and students of Ukraine, and with the entire population of the country.
To support our students impacted by the war in Ukraine, the University will make a special fund available.
Importantly, our condemnation of the war should not be seen as a condemnation of Russian colleagues or Russian students, who take no part in this aggression and who belong to our community. As a sign of solidarity with the people of Ukraine, I will lay a flower tomorrow, Thursday 3 March at 13.00 in #Belval by the Peace Pole, next to the Maison du Savoir. All those who want to accompany me in a minute of silence are welcome. Let us stand united in the face of adversity.

Canadian Mathematical Society

Dear Colleagues,
This is already done and the press release is available on the webpage of CMS.
We also collaborate with the Canadian Math Institutes and centers to provide further support for Ukrainian colleagues. More news to come.

Best wishes,

President of Canadian Mathematical Society

Official statement regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine and participation in the 2022 ICM

The CMS is deeply concerned by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the issues that it brings forth. In light of recent events, the CMS has made a decision regarding the 2022 International Congress of Mathematicians, which is scheduled to take place in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Russia currently does not provide the environment required for the important exchange of mathematical ideas in the spirit of academic freedom. Therefore, the CMS will not be sending any official delegates to the ICM in Russia, nor does it support participation in the event.

Statement: European Mathematical Society solidarity with partners in Ukraine – consequences for the mathematical community

The following statement on the Russian invasion of Ukraine has been aproved by the EMS Executive Committee, on 1st March 2022. The European Mathematical Society (EMS) supports the European Union’s consistent action against Russia's attack on Ukraine, which is in violation of international law. The EMS regards the Russian invasion as an attack on the fundamental values of freedom, democracy and self-determination, which in turn provide the basis for academic freedom and opportunities for academic cooperation. We are in strong solidarity with the people of Ukraine and our mathematical colleagues. Although we believe strongly in international scientific cooperation, at this stage we recommend that academic cooperation with state institutions and business enterprises in Russia are frozen and no new cooperations should be initiated at the present time. The EMS is aware of the consequences of these measures and at the same time deeply regrets them for science. In this direction our solidarity also goes to our long-standing Russian partners and scholars who are themselves horrified at Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
